The convergence of several main streets of Palos Verdes create a large triangular swath of land. In the past, the land has been planted with lawn, however, with drought and maintenance an ongoing concern, the grass was left to die.
As this is a major entry into the city, and just steps away from city hall and the hub of civic life, a major improvement was needed.
UCLA and other schools as well as professionals were invited to take part in a charrette to determine possible solutions.
In the end, the UCLA proposal to create a 9/11 Memorial was chosen by the city council.
The site is located on the north eastern perimeter of Palos Verdes and is a major entry point into the city.
The concept we settled on to present to the City Council centered on the arrangement of flags in two layers: a group of 9 flags surrounded by a circle of 11 flags. After all teams presented, this became the crux of the winning proposal.
The concept of the circle around the cluster is illustrated in this quick section sketch.
Plant selection is kept simple and conforms to state requirements for visibility and city requests for low maintenance, community interest in keeping things green, and the observance of the Mediterranean architecture of the surrounding buildings.
Placement of the flags is evident on the larger triangle.
This is a perspective of the site.
Construction and installation is in progress for a Spring 2019 Completion.
